I’m choosing styles rather than a specific show, today. I hope you don’t mind.
I’m a fan of the “Deen aesthetic,” and I’m into just about every shoujo I’ve seen Studio Deen animate. Please don’t misunderstand–I don’t like every style they employ; rather, I enjoy specific combinations of their realism and artistry. It’s accurate in it’s proportions and it’s beautiful. The styles that I enjoy most from Studio Deen range from their modern “Bishie-realism” to full-stop “Artistically Realistic.” These types of animation can also be found in titles from other studios. I loved the animation of Planetes by Sunrise and Toshokan Sensou by Production I.G., for example, but for the purposes of finding examples for this post, I’ll stick to works animated by Studio Deen.
Example of “Bishie-realism:” Hakuouki
Example of “Artistically Realistic:” Rurouni Kenshin: Meiji Kenkaku Romantan – Seisou-hen
Example of Stylized “Bishie-Realism:” Vampire Knight
I’m also fond of the Studio Ghibli style as seen in Howl’s Moving Castle.
I mean, I also really like the animation in Snow White with the Red Hair, and that was done by Bones. But this is going to get excessive if I allow myself to carry on…
What is your favorite animation?
In a while, crocodiles!
Shoujothoughts
I like the look of most of Bones anime, though unless the animation is notably bad I tend to refrain from too much judgement. Other than looks pretty or doesn’t I’m not particularly discerning in that department.
