Feature the Most Evil Character (30 Day Character Challenge, Day 17)

I have the cutest cat in the word, and if I told you otherwise to appease all the other cat owners out there, I’d be lying. Yes, there are other cute cats, and yes, I can love them, but my baby Muffin is the best cat in existence for about 75 million reasons that would take far too long for me to list out here. Just know that she is sitting on the chair beside me, rubbing her face on the table edges and putting her little feet on the table to get the ‘ttentions. And, no, she totally didn’t coerce me into writing this. What on earth do you mean?

Now that I’m done gushing about my sweet baby cat who I would love even if she were bald (HUSBAND), it’s time to get back into the 30 Day Character Challenge (source here) with day 17, the most evil character I can comprehend…

Ooooo. That’s a tough one. The titles I watch aren’t much for pure evil so much as misunderstood evil. But I suppose I’ll have to think of someone… hmm… who to choose…

Oh! I know! But they’ll be spoilers…

Rido Kuran from Vampire Knight

Image result for rido kuran

Let’s not beat around the bush about it; the dude is bad. Rido, Yuki’s uncle and Kaname’s descendant, only begins by murdering Yuki’s parents (who are also his siblings because anime is weird) and spiraling the “young” lives of two fledgling vampires out of control. He later returns to power only to body bind Senri and ultimately attempt the ruination of everything Kaname’s been trying so hard to protect.

In most shoujo anime, the villians are misunderstood or hold some secret redeeming qualities, but not Rido. He’s straight up evil for the sake of it. He takes what he wants without remorse, and very little gets in his way.

Anime Expo Updates (and Cosplay Countdown)~!

We’re down to the wire, dear anime enthusiasts. Time for a few AX updates!

Firstly, I am happy to announce that our concussed friend, he-who-has-yet-to-pick-a-blog-pseudonym, will be attending the expo with us in just a few days time. Our compatriots count is back up to three: Shoujo, Chronic, and no-name! As you may recall, no-name’s status was uncertain after a fairly severe head injury left him recuperating half way across the country. We finally have a better picture of all that transpired.

While still at the seminary, no-name was playing basketball and got elbowed hard in the temple; he earned a black, swollen shut eye, near constant headache, and dizzy spells, but—unfamiliar with concussion symptoms—he didn’t know why. He ended up going through finals and even driving hundreds of miles home, but when he got there I suppose he ended up at the doctor and they were like “CHILD WHAT DID YOU DO?” He basically got put in a rest period–walking, activity, screen time all big no-nos.

Now he’s home and recovering nicely, planning to attend so long as he stays feeling as good as he is right now. I’m glad for this; let’s send no-name some love if he’s reading at home!

I should probably tell you a bit about Chroinc, too. While no-name is a very new friend, Chronic is the person who introduced me to anime (Ouran!!) and may potentially be featured quite heavily as part of our exposition adventures~!? (Truly I have no idea how this will all go down.)

You’ve probably seen my “meet the blog cast” page, so in a similar manner, I now present Chronic (who should totally put what I’m about to say in his cover letter):

  • glorious hair
  • quiet drunk
  • telling you how it is
  • enough common sense for the both of us
  • who are you?
  • dandere
  • don’t care that I’m a twin (but everyone else does because it’s cool??)
  • spaghetti is not my forte
  • don’t make me drive the car
  • retired WoW addict (for now)
  • hire me to be your lowkey bad@$$ friend
  • got that computer science on lock
  • do I have a favorite food?
  • eggplant is a color and is The Jam ™

Aaaaaannnyway, getting serious again, my vampire Yuki Cross (Vampire Knight) cosplay is all but complete–I’m working on the holster for my collapsed Artemis Rod and still trying to use fashion clips to make my uniform coat fit a bit better, but everything else is ready to go with the addition of boots I found only today. Would you care for a sneak peak?

I’ll be returning the black boots I found previously (but have yet to do more than try on) by mail. The necklace Husband made with his 3D printer is lovely, and he’s made me an Artemis Rod in the same fashion. Truly, it’s been so much fun seeing everything come together. 🙂

I’ve also picked up some pink ribbon so that, with the removal of my jacket and a change of socks, I can have an entirely different uniform.

You know. Just for a day I feel like wearing pink and pig tails? HAIR RIBBONS FOR DAYS~~ ❤ ❤

Our flight leaves early Friday morning, and we’re excited for all that is to come. I won’t be stuck to my phone the whole time, preferring rather to live in the moment, but you can expect updates from “Shoujo @ AX2017” on my Twitter account (apparently that’s a thing I should temporarily do–change my name to reflect my con location?) with lots fangirl ravings. Hopefully, with the consent of cosplayers, I’ll even post some pictures of costume awesomeness to Shoujo Thoughts: Otaku Ramblings either during the con or shortly after returning home!

My “business” cards are ready that I might direct others to my blog/their photos. See?

And now I’m just left wondering how I’ll get my rod (really a hollow, pipe-like tube) through airport security. Do I tell them I have a movie prop in my check bag? (^^;; Advice from any who have flown with cosplay before?

I think I’ve arranged my homework schedule so that I’ll only have to take a quiz on the flight over and post to discuss boards on the way back. If I can use Chronic’s laptop for a half hour (and I’m sure he’ll let me), I’m golden.

Look for an “Adventures in Onigiri” post fairly soon! I’m nursing a headache and feeling a bit wonky at the moment, so I’ll sign off now and maybe try taking a short nap.

Love, Peace, Geese,

❤ Shoujo

I need to get safety pins…

…and a small sewing kit. Can I bring that in the con?

Cosplay Catastrophe and Reset, Followed by the Concussion of the Century (Anime Expo 2017)

”Tis the season of unexpected happenings!! I’m honestly excited, all things considered. I mean, perception is 9/10th, right? Well, maybe not, but I’ve found my bright side.

ʕ•̫͡•ʕ•̫͡•ʔ•̫͡•ʔ•̫͡•ʕ•̫͡•ʔ•̫͡•ʕ•̫͡•ʕ•̫͡•ʔ•̫͡•ʔ•̫͡•ʕ•̫͡•ʔ•̫͡•ʔ

I’ll begin not with what happened first, but what happened most recently… One of our presumed conference compatriots (not Chronic, but rather “he-who-as-of-yet-must-not-be-named”) won a bad concussion playing basketball on a trip back home to visit family, the severity of which dictates mandatory rest for an entire month. I don’t know what his conference status is, but it isn’t looking good, so we’re assuming until otherwise stated that Chronic and I are once again tag teaming AX2017. I feel very bad for our anonymous once-adventurer, as I think he’d finally made the jump to buy his plane ride and I know he’s purchased many concert tickets. (He’s very much into JPop.) I reached out, but he doesn’t seem to be in much of a chatty place right now, understandibly. Poor guy. 😦 😦

I dunno when we’ll know more on that end, but rather than confirm anything, I’m just going to let him come to me with updates as he is ready. He’s older than us and has wanted to go to AX even longer than we have, so this blow isn’t fun, and we are all just glad it didn’t mess up his scholasic plans (which, in the seminary, is so easy to do).

But maybe he’ll be up and at ‘um; you just never know, right? It’s at the end of his convalescent period; things are going to be dicey. Well save his spot and cross our fingers for him!

ʕ•̫͡•ʕ•̫͡•ʔ•̫͡•ʔ•̫͡•ʕ•̫͡•ʔ•̫͡•ʕ•̫͡•ʕ•̫͡•ʔ•̫͡•ʔ•̫͡•ʕ•̫͡•ʔ•̫͡•ʔ

Before this came about, my costumer skipped town the day they were supposed so send my costume! No, no, I’m not kidding!

I can’t sew a costume of the quality I crave; I don’t own a machine, and my hand stitching is limited to doll clothes. Two months out I commissioned this woman on Etsy to make my costume. I knew she was… frankly a diva… based on confrontations documented between herself and other clients, but her work was fabulous and I figured, hey, it’s one transaction and I’ll get alterations done locally if necessary, so no harm no foul. I trusted this woman, worked with her, treated her professionally (and kindly as one should)…

Well, a week before my costume was supposed to ship, this woman sends me an Etsy message saying that she’s closing her store because of a bad experience. What could be that wrong, I wondered, and I checked her reviews. Sure enough, she’s arguing no holds barred with a woman for whom she made a costume. The reviewer left 3/5 stars, and the costumer was just NOT HAVING that kind of criticism? Anyway, the costumer is on the attack, and this time she’s apparently decided to close her store. Over a three/five star review no less. Truly.

She says she’ll still be sending my costume on Friday, gives me a tracking number, and provides her contact information. Very well, that’s her prerogative; I appreciate she’s finishing my costume as agreed upon well over a month ago, and I’ll send her a kind email back. But noooo~~~~, this woman cannot be trusted, because the day my costume is supposed to be sent out, we get an email from Etsy very late that night announcing that her store has not only been closed but deleted, that I’ve been given a refund through PayPal, and that she “contacted the buyer” (me!) letting me know this. Guess what! NO SHE DIDN’T!

I try contacting her through the phone number she gave me only to find it disconnected. And then I sat there stuck, ready to scream or cry, because I carefully planned all this out in advance, and now, I think, it’s too late for a backup plan. Goodbye Tohru. My potentially once in a lifetime trip isn’t complete without cosplay. I’m such a goob. It’s a first world problem but I was so upset after trusting her and spending all this time/money.

What’s a girl to do? Well, I’ll tell you what she’s not to do: give up!

Before ever deciding on Tohru, I considered cosplaying as Yuri Cross from Vampire Knight. Tohru worked out better because my hair is long (whereas human Yuki’s is short) and my eyes are blue, but I still hold a very, very special place in my heart for Vampire Knight. (I discuss this awesome show here.)

In desperation and on a whim, I searched the internet for someone making custom Yuki cosplay. As luck would have it, I found what I was looking for, but they’re overseas, and even through I payed for rush shipping, the odds of my costume making it here in time aren’t guaranteed…

Anyway, I’ll leave this here for now, but you should know the plans have changed.

As it looks right now, it’s Chronic and I against the world and Shoujo cosplaying as Yuri Cross (vampire version) as shown below. ❤

Time to get color contacts in which I’ll see a bit blurry! (But I think I’m getting black boots over dark dark brown because I found some at HotTopic and I’ll wear them again. Does that ruin the cosplay?) My sweet husband is going to 3D print the charm for my Yuki necklace so we can make it ourselves (and I’ll keep it forever and wear it a lot not only because it’s cool but because Husband made it!!). I don’t know that I need fake bangs because human hair will never look as piecey as anime hair so that’s not expected like it would be for human Yuki!! I’m excited!! (My hair isn’t quite long enough, but it was still a little short for Tohru, too, so I don’t think it will matter.)

Your throughts? Black boots okay? I HOPE MY UNIFORM COMES IN!!

God bless you!

The Anime with the Best Animation (30 Day Anime Challenge, Day 16)

I’m choosing styles rather than a specific show, today. I hope you don’t mind.

I’m a fan of the “Deen aesthetic,” and I’m into just about every shoujo I’ve seen Studio Deen animate. Please don’t misunderstand–I don’t like every style they employ; rather, I enjoy specific combinations of their realism and artistry. It’s accurate in it’s proportions and it’s beautiful. The styles that I enjoy most from Studio Deen range from their modern “Bishie-realism” to full-stop “Artistically Realistic.” These types of animation can also be found in titles from other studios. I loved the animation of Planetes by Sunrise and Toshokan Sensou by Production I.G., for example, but for the purposes of finding examples for this post, I’ll stick to works animated by Studio Deen.

Example of “Bishie-realism:” Hakuouki

Example of “Artistically Realistic:” Rurouni Kenshin: Meiji Kenkaku Romantan – Seisou-hen

I’m also fond of the Studio Ghibli style as seen in Howl’s Moving Castle.

I mean, I also really like the animation in Snow White with the Red Hair, and that was done by Bones. But this is going to get excessive if I allow myself to carry on…

What is your favorite animation?

Favorite Male Anime Character (30 Day Anime Challenge, Day 3)

No, no, no, don’t do this to me, NO. I mean, it’s SHOUJO. How am I supposed to have ONE favorite male character? HOW?? I have oodles, so many different personalities and appearances and development arcs that it boggles the mind! There is absolutely NO way that I can play the favorites game today, uh uh, nope, case closed, no way…

How about a gallery of favorite male character’s images each with three accompanying adjectives/nouns and one short sentence for brevity? Sound reasonable? Or…well, acceptable?

Yes? Yes. Very good. Off the top of my head, here we go.

An Unordered Shout Out to (Some of) Shoujo’s Favorite (Male) Voice Actors!

I gave up on twisting hooks into the drywall and sat in my pink office chair. Instead of attempting to manifest my less-that-proficient home improvement skills, I tuned in to the dub of Nondame Cantabile (I know nothing about this yet, guys. I might just start watching Ouran episode 7, but still…). Doing so, I read the most humorous comment before I hit the video.

“Why,” I paraphrase, “must every side character be voiced by Vic Mignogna? I love Vic…but it’s so confusing…”

Immediately I was laughing, because I love Vic’s work and totally get her point, but it got me thinking about a post that I’d been meaning to make for a while. Who are some of my favorite (male—I mean, it’s shoujo.) voice actors? Why do I feel this way? Is it even possible for me to rank them?

The easy answer to that last question is, “NO.” I can’t rank them, at least at present. Far too much deliberation involved there and my conclusions are liable to fluctuate wildly on a daily basis. What I can do, however, is give a shout out to a short few of my favorites for being so totally awesome.

I discovered many of my favorites by falling in love with one of their voices, and then realizing that I had heard it before and loved their acting for (a) previous character(s)/following it like a dog sniffing a trail to other anime in which they acted in which I proceeded to absolutely fall in love with their performances. Every single one of them is from an English dub. Because, you know, I was ONLY a dub girl until just rather recently in the grand scheme of things. (Eventually you run out of dubs and just have to make the jump…Don’t worry, it gets better. You’ll come to love it in some ways.)

I won’t spend much time analyzing their qualities; that’s for another time. I won’t list all the characters that they’ve played; that’s what Behind the Voice Actor is for.

Keeping in mind that it is quite likely that I will attempt this in a more official and less haphazard capacity in the future, I present without further ado…

An Unordered Shout Out to (Some of) Shoujo’s Favorite (Male) Voice Actors!

*Crowed roars; mothers hug their children; fanboys rip open shirts to reveal painted chests in tailgate fashion boasting letters spelling “A-N-D-R-E-W L-O-V-E-!” *

Andrew Love

I should mention that I first discovered Andrew Love when I stumbled across Hiiro No Kakera—The Tamayori Princess Saga. He voices Guardian Takuma Onizaki. I enjoyed the series, but I will fully admit that it wasn’t the best reverse harem shoujo romance that I’ve ever seen. It ran into some common pitfalls, but let me tell you—Andrew Love’s voice acting is not one of them. He blew me away, and really got me into searching up other shows in which he featured. THIS lead me to connect some dots and realize that he also voices the loving and somewhat ridiculous (but awesome) father, Akio Furukawa, in Clannad (TV and movie) and Clannad: After Story (a TOTAL shift from that male romantic lead, am I right? But still an excellent performance). His performance in Hiiro No Kakera made me discover and watch Hakuouki: Demon of the Fleeting Blossom (which I later discovered is just as enjoyable in the subtitled version), in which he plays the Oni Vice Commander of the Shinsengumi, Toshizo Hijikata. He reprises this role in the sequel, prequel, OVAs, and films. I was SOLD. DONE. Hook, line, and sinker—caught! And Hakuouki is one of my favorite shows! Andrew Love makes my top voice actor list, definitely. Go listen to his manly tones!

toshiToshizo Hijikata

J. Michael Tatum

Do you have all day? I might need it. He was one of the reasons that I started watching Black Butler on a whim! Tatum plays the “cool type,” Kyoya Ootori, in my intro-to-anime’s ultimate shoujo, Ouran High School Host Club. Does my admiration need any explanation if you’ve been following this blog at all? He voices tsundere fox yokai, Tomoe, in Kamisama Hajimemashita. I love that show, and I love his performance, and I sometimes I watch it and “I just can’t.”

I mean, those amazing performances alone would be enough to earn him a top spot on my list, right? Right. But then what do I discover? HE CONTINUES TO BLOW MY MIND AS SEBASTIAN MICHAELIS IN BLACK BUTLER.

What do all these roles have in common? Those tones and characters have a matching elegance, tradition, and class—as well as allure—that is just inescapable when Tatum is turning on his own unique brand of enchantment.

tomoeOh Tomoe, what would we do without your tsundre? lol

Vic Mignogna

I won’t get too deeply into discussion on Vic seeing as how I’ve gushed about him in the past (check my tags #vicmignogna and #music for more information), but just to give you a rundown…

Edward Elric in Fullmental Alchemist and Fullmental Alchemist Brotherhood, Tamaki Suoh in Ouran High School Host Club, Zero (and Ichiru) Kiryu in Vampire Knight and Vampire Knight Guilty, Futo Asahina in Brothers Conflict, Takenaga Oda in The Wallflower (WHAT? Yes, I say!), Yukito Kunisaki in Air and Air TV (I KID YOU NOT.), Broly in the DBZ movies… Need I say anything more?

Yes, I do need. You read me write Futo Asahina in Brothers Conflict? Talk about an unexpected personality for him to portray!

zeroZero Kiryu

Greg Ayers

Okay, Greg brings a little something to this party that is super endearing and sweet. He’s the one who sounds young or timid, sometimes rash, inexperienced (sometimes), endearing, but charming and surprisingly competent (usually). His voice is easily recognizable. Let’s list a few of my favorites he’s played, shall we? You can always tell when it’s Greg Ayers…

Youhei Sunohara in Clannad (TV and movie) and Clannad After Story, Kaoru Hitachiin in Ouran High School Host Club (See, you can tell, right?), Heisuke Toudou in Hakuouki: Demon of the Fleeting Blossom (and all its associated content), Yukinojo (Yuki) Toyama in The Wallflower, Mannen in Pretear, and Mahiro Atori in Hiiro No Kakera—The Tamayori Princess Saga: with all that under his belt, how can you not go gaga over this man’s talent?

yukinojo-yuki-toyama Yes, I know that picture looks super weird. Blame The Wallflower.

David Matranga

This guy doesn’t get talked about enough, does he? Let’s fix that. Matranga has a very soothing quality to his voice that makes it a pleasure to listen to; I think you’ll agree when you start to recognize his vocal roles in a number of popular shoujo anime titles. He makes the list because he is expressive, soothing, and an all-around talent. A few of his roles include Keisuke Sannan from Hakuouki: Demon of the Fleeting Blossom (Do I really need to add all its additional material again?), Yuichi Komura in Hiiro No Kakera—The Tamayori Princess Saga, FREAKING TOMOYA OKAZAKI IN CLANNAD (movie and TV) AND CLANNAD AFTER STORY, Richter in Diabolik Lovers (I’m not kidding, guys.), Takumi Usui in Maid Sama! (I had to stop watching this in the dub and pick up the sub because I couldn’t take Monica Rial as Misaki Ayuzawa, but that’s beside the point; Matranga was awesome.), and Subaru Asahina in Brother’s Conflict. That’s a pretty decent resume, I’d say.

Also, you should have heard me when I realized that Sanan-san and Tomoya were the same person. It was simply too much.

tomoya-clannad-32985788-464-260If you don’t know this is from Clannad, go watch now and have all the feels.

This is NOT a comprehensive list, but I’ll stop here tonight. Off the top of my head, these men make the top five!

So, tell me fellow shoujo lovers, how do you feel about these awesome actors? Who are some of your favorites? Leave a comment and let me know, ‘kay? (∩。∩)ノ***

Let’s Talk About “Vampire Knight” (DUB/SUB)-Highly Recommended

You’re sitting in your living room. It’s dark. You gaze at the Netflix titles glowing on-screen; you have seen this title referenced before.

Vampire Knight.

Zero. That was his name. The silver-haired, amethyst-eyed character you’d heard of, the one who got you interested in the show, before you stumbled across it on the streaming service. (You’d later find out that Zero was voiced by Vic Mignogina, making the character all that much more intriguing.) You saw a clip on YouTube. He was trying to battle against himself.

Everything you’ve seen indicates that this show will be a dark, supernatural, romantic, intense.

You select the first episode. And you know…

There is no turning back.

“You will be captured by those eyes. By the red.”

“Vampire Knight” is a show that seems to me like it would garner strong reactions. I propose that even those skeptical (those who, unlike me, didn’t fall in love with it after the first episode) give it a few episodes to prove itself. When a viewer gets deep into it’s complicated plot, they will find themselves hooked as they watch the dark romances unfold and try to uncover a past shrouded in mystery.

And, don’t even get me started on Season 2:”Vampire Knight, Guilty”. You won’t be able to look away.

This anime, the third title that I watched on my journey into anime, comes very very highly recommended. I finished it in a period of 2 days because I had to know what happened next.

VampireKnight.jpg

IT IS IMPORTANT TO NOTE that “Vampire Knight” will only be available on Netflix until August 31st, 2016. After this date, the show will be rolled out along with some of their other titles.

Now, please excuse me while I skip off and forsake my other considerable responsibilities in order to watch my favorite bits of this amazing anime. Another hit from Studio Deen.
