“Beneath the Sun, do hearts endure?” –CMV/AMV Saturday 3/7/20

The hauntingly beautiful lyrics sung by Robyn Ardery as written by Mimi-des (@mcarol85) serve as an English cover of Mo Dao Zu Shi’s OP, here titled “Drunken Dreams of the Past.” They tell the entire story of MDZS for those who are familiar with the plot, and aside from how beautiful it sounds on it’s most basic level, that’s one more reason that I felt the need to feature this AMV; how often does one find this sort of story telling within the limits presented by the existing music?

It’s such a powerful motivator to watch the series, giving away PLENTY to those who know the story already without spoiling the plot for those who are less familiar. It’s mesmerizing across levels (singing, writing, clips).

If you enjoy it as much as I do, please give the creators love, and tell them Shoujo sent you. ❤

Beneath the Sun, do hearts endure?/ The rhythm, their beating, unsure/ To want, to follow, selfless strums are heard/ In the silence, a dream comes undone/ But despite the doubts and against all odds/ This someone, plays the flute/ And still, the truth is unclear/ Yet the tune he plays, of the night in caves/ Reveals to one, his fantasy is alive/ The dream unfurls

“Don’t you wanna get away?” — CMV/AMV Saturday 7/6/19

It’s probably not a secret that I enjoy music from “The Greatest Showman,” but seeing this particular song applied to Ouran High School Host Club is something else entirely. BecauseImBored1 did an excellent job using “The Other Side” to tell a very accurate story.

In the first part of the song, Tamaki is talking to each host individually (well, except the twins, but I digress). He’s saying, “Don’t you want to get away from the same old parts you gotta play?” to Honey as he struggles against being himself. He says it to the twins that they can “stay in the cage” of their own twin-centric world or they can take the key he offers and join him. Each of them can be free to fly.

But then Kyoya happens. Kyoya, whose family keeps him bound. Kyoya, who enjoys his creature comforts. Kyoya responds to Tamaki. He says that the sacrifice to visit the other side would be much too great, that he would lose his respected position, and that Tamaki is free to be himself, but Kyoya will continue on his expected path.

But then we see how deeply Tamaki has impacted Kyoya. He has influenced him to become greater than the frame into which he was painted. He said it was worth the risk. He said that he knew Kyoya wasn’t really happy. He invites him in again, and Kyoya is moved by Tamaki’s promise of freedom. There’s beauty in that freedom.

The end money matters clinches it (because hello, it’s Kyoya) and they continue the endeavor together, Mommy and Daddy of the Host Club. It’s surprisingly emotional, in all honesty, and very well put together. The scenes fit the song nicely to create a narrative.

But you would finally live a little, finally laugh a little
Just let me give you the freedom to dream
And it’ll wake you up and cure your aching
Take your walls and start ’em breaking
Now that’s a deal that seems worth taking
But I guess I’ll leave that up to you

“And the Bible Didn’t Mention Us” — CMV/AMV Saturday 6/29/19

I don’t have any idea what this is, but it’s beautiful. I don’t know well the song “Sampson” by Regina Spektor (which I love) fits this AMV by SamanthaCaelo, but it’s lovely. The comment section told me this ship is from Norigami, which I’ve only watched a few episodes of with Chronic. It didn’t seem much like my thing, but this ship seems heartbreaking, and now I wonder if I should give it another chance and stick with it until I get to this couple. Of course, that precludes any self-preservation instincts I may have from doing their job as the ship will probably break my heart if this AMV is anything to go by. Still, I’m tempted.

I have in the past found other shows from watching AMVs of them first. Have any of you seen Norigami? Without spoilers, can you tell me if I should watch it for this ship? Would I come to like this show?

“Somebody make me feel alive.” — CMV/AMV Saturday (10/20/17)

Let’s be real: I have no idea what I’m doing with this. Maybe it sounds ridiculous, but I like Nighcore, the Hakuouki characters, and the song “Shatter Me” by Lindsey Sterling and Lizzy Hale. Combine them and I don’t have a choice but to feature it, you see?

I won’t pretend that this AMV by Mitsu Harlock is the single deepest AMV I’ve ever seen, the fact that it exists was enough for me to draw comparison between the song and Souji.

While not displayed in the AMV, the song “Shatter Me” somehow reminds me of Okita’s fate and choices in ONE of the in-game (not anime) endings. In this particular route, *spoilers* he sacrifices himself to allow Chizuru and her companion (who shall remain unnamed) to escape as they attempt to see/save Koundo before he is executed. In that moment, sick and feeble as he is, bereft of all hope that he’ll see Kondou again alive, he rages against his enemies in a desperate attempt to make his life worth something to himself in the last moments before he’s “cut…from the line.”

And it breaks my heart.

One might also make reference to Souji’s in-game feelings from his own route in Hakuouki: Kyoto Winds. The lyrics state, “I’m scared of changing, the days stay the same/
The world is spinning but only in gray.” In the game, Souji was afraid of becoming useless to Kondou in his illness, of staying stagnant, sick in bed while everyone else fought on. He had little hope. Everything went on without him, the days stretching endlessly as he, in his mind, settled someplace between life and death…

So, like I said, the AMV is not my favorite AMV ever made (though it’s for sure better than I could do with my non-existent editing skills!), but there is just something about it that resonates with certain endings of Souji Okita, and that’s really all I can say.

“So cut me from the line
Dizzy, spinning endlessly
Somebody make me feel alive
And shatter me!”

-Lizzy Hale

Russia’s Famous Love Machine – CMV/AMV SATURDAY (10/06/18)

This is just too much for my poor heart to take. I know that the song doesn’t fit exactly, I know it, but it’s been stuck in my head for days now, and the thought of combining Victor Nikiforov with the words “Russia’s Greatest Love Machine” was too much for me to pass up. So, today for your viewing pleasure, I present this AMV by MCRfreak925 set to Ra Ra Rasputin by BONEY M.

I’m a history nerd quite thoroughly educated in the Russian monarchy, so I know that Rasputin and Victor really have nothing in common, but I still have to post it. I have to. It’s a physical and emotional need at this point.

The creator plans to submit this AMV to a contest in November! Why not hop on over to YouTube and give her some encouragement!

Faces of the Scouting Regiment – CMV/AMV SATURDAY (09/29/18)

Frankly, the quality of this CMV put out by Cosplay Videos by Diesel blows my mind. The amount of time, energy, planning, cooperation, and editing that went into this video titled “2000 Years Ago” is astounding. The collaboration of 20 cosplayers and 3 crew members was filmed in Germany. Entirely amateur, they have no film making experience, but did this to show their love for Attack on Titan.

If you enjoyed this filmette as much as I did, please go to Youtube and send the creators some love. They wholeheartedly deserve it. ❤

Dance Attack on Wall Maria – CMV/AMV SATURDAY (09/22/18)

Have you ever felt the need to see Attack on Titan acted out in dance? Well, now you can, thanks to this video posted by VIBRVNCY of the 909 Hip Hop Dance Troupe performing The Survey Corps | Ultimate Brawl XIV 2014. This stunning dance performance takes the audience clearly from the beginning of AoT season 1 until just after the walls were breached a second time by the colossal titan.

What can I say, I’m a sucker for dance interpretations of anime. There’s something about a talented group who spends so much time and effort to emulate an anime they’re fond of that I can’t help but admire.

What do you think of dance cosplay performances? Let me know in the comments below!
