When I stumbled upon this video, my heart swelled within my chest and pressed against my ribs. This video combines one of my favorite songs with one of my favorite anime titles, and I don’t know how I didn’t realize the representational ACCURACY of the song on our leads’ relationship. ❤ The AMV below is by Fangirl on Ice and is set to Something Just Like This as performed by The Chainsmokers feat. Coldplay.
Victor is an unattainable idol from Yuuri’s childhood—his ultimate crush, even!!—but he’s also a very real, beautifully flawed, deeply silly, extra man who wants nothing more than to love Yuuri. It takes Yuuri some real time to come to grips with this fact, and to understand that, yes, Victor is just a man and yes, Yuuri does deserve him. For the longest time, even in his willingness to leave the ice for Victor’s return, Yuuri puts Victor on a podium. In his books, Victor is among legends, and as the song so clearly states, “clearly I don’t see myself upon that list.” Eventually, though, things change. And, in Yuuri realizing the truth, the point of the video comes into play; are you ready?
Victor doesn’t expect Yuuri to be perfect, or superhuman, or a fairy tale. Victor doesn’t need Yuuri to live up to him. He just needs Yuuri to be to Yuuri, to be real. He wants something just like what they have, “something just like this.”
