ONI POWERS ARE EPIC, CASE CLOSED.*

There are a variety of epic scenes in anime (everyone else: [sarcastically] No, really?), but what one must understand is that I primarily watch SHOUJO, which does narrow my frame of reference. That out of the way, shall I answer this question based on visual appeal or character ability?
No, I suppose that isn’t the question really, for though I’ve seen some characters do pretty astounding things (think Sebastian-spitting-out-bullets kind of amazing), there is really one scene that comes to mind by which I was most visually wowed though an epic display.
In the movie Hakuouki: Kyoto Rambu, I greatly enjoy watching the scene in which Kazama, Shiranui, and Amagiri infiltrate the Shinsengumi headquarters in an attempt to kidnap Chizuru. The brief battles that ensue are visually stunning, and though the effort makes sense because it was a theatrical release, I none the less appreciate the especially epic display of oni powers at their best.
The whole movie makes a point of beautifully animating close ups and visual effects. For this reason as well as the narrative and emotional context of the event portrayed, my choice today was easy.
So, tell me, have you seen the film? What do you think? Still images (the last of which is of dubious quality?) don’t hope to do the scene above justice, so don’t knock it until you’ve watched it; I can nearly guarantee you’ll be impressed!

THE SCENE (also in “Hakuouki: Kyoto Ranbu”) DURING WHICH HIJIKATA FIGHTS KAZAMA IS PRETTY AMAZING AND I THINK THAT IT MIGHT BEAT THIS ONE OUT. JUST SAYING. NO, IT TOTALLY BEATS IT OUT, 100%.
The music, emotion, visuals, animation, characterization… everything in that scene is flawless.

I agree; it is one of my favorites as well. I’ve watched it so many times and I’ve yet to tire of Hakuouki. Did you watch the dub or sub? Have you seen all the incarnations? Also, have you played the game? 😀 (clearly I will fangirl about this)
